06Silk-farm+lake1 (32 images) - ALBUM 6 - Sao takes us to
the Lake & Silk Farm, Feb. 22.
On this date we hired Sao to act as our
guide and take us via his “Tuk Tuk for Peace” to 2 places he recommended. First,
we went south of Seim Reap to take a boat out the waterway to the huge Tonle Sap
Lake, known as the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. The boat took us
out to a “floating” restaurant/shopping area. For our second visit, we returned
to Siem Reap for a trip east of town to the
Artisans d'Angkor’s Silk Farm. We
had visited the Artisans d'Angkor workshop in Siem Reap on our previous trip and
were impressed with its diverse training/education program (see
this 2003 photo
album).
The demonstration farm offered an excellent interpretive display featuring the
complete process as well as a museum of historical methods in the silk making
industry. For more on this organization and its 2 training centers, see
this Wikipedia page.Click a picture to see a larger view.
