Day 5, Wednesday - NRK TV's Sigmund Hansen comes to Slogvik regarding Bautastein Project

Thanks to our Norway List friend "Knut from Odda," we are again put in contact with Sigmund Hansen, a local representative of Norway's national TV, NRK. After exchanging some e-mails and phone calls, arrangements are made for Sigmund to visit the Slovik farm to tape the Viking stone Einar has proposed sending to California. He will also interview Einar and Keith regarding the "Slooper Monument Project," that being the proposal to have such a stone at the graves of the emigration pioneers, Jakob Anderson Slogvik and his wife Serena, who are buried just north of San Francisco.  We had met Sigmund on our previous December 2001 visit to Norway when he did a TV segment on Keith's Slogvik and Quaker connections in Tysvær area.

A view of Hervik fjord from the Slogvik yard overlooking the bautastein (of Viking stone) Einar has placed there.

Looking back at this stone with better lighting, it looms prominent in front of their home.

Sigmund arrives & Einar has his heavy equipment ready to lift the stone.

This time Sigmund acts as his own cameraman & goes through the required setup procedures before taping.

And still more setup is needed to get the correct lighting & views.

As Einar mans the excavator, Keith connects the chain in order to lift the bautastein.

As the stone is lifted, Sigmund gets shots from various angles.

Now it is time to prepare Keith for Sigmund's interview, which will be conducted while he sits on this very cold stone!

The interview begins - Sigmund asks questions, Keith explains, Einar listens, & PC is bored

Skilful Einar assists Sigmund in setting up the camera tripod for the next segment to be taped.

It is now Einar's turn to explain more about the stone & the monument project.

At the conclusion of these interviews, the 3 guys pose for this photo taken by Peg, who took most of the pictures on this page.

Peg & Einar walk down in the frost covered field where the stone was originally found several years ago.

Einar, Sigmund & Keith walk back up from the field.

Interested in all the activity, the Slogvik sheep come to find out about all this activity in their field.

Everyone now moves to the front of Einar & Rotraud's home where Sigmund tapes Keith & Einar walking with the fjord & Borgøy in the background.

One last interview segment gives Keith a chance to expound upon his ideas & deep connection to this place & its current owners.

Time to warm up & have some breakfast in the comfortable Slogvik kitchen. Also time for interesting conversation as Sigmund shares his several family connections with the States.
