Week 1 - Mexico City layover, city of La Ceiba & Plantation Beach Resort on the Cayos Cochinos Islands off the North Coast of Honduras

On December 5th, 2005, Peg and Keith fly south for traveling in Central America & Mexico.  These are photos from the first week of this trip.

1

On our way south, we had an 8 hr. layover in Mexico City, so we took the metro into the city center and enjoyed the cathedral.
2

The city center, or Zolaco is all decked out for the holiday season with lights and decorations.
3

After 5 planes, we finally arrive at La Ceiba which we explore while waiting for our friend, Sue Kosis to join us before we go out to the island.
4

Sue and Peg wait for the dive boat which picks us up for the 12 mile ride to the bay island of Coyos Cochinos. (we learn later this sail boat (L) belongs to the resort's carpenter, Peter.)
5

La Ceiba and the Honduras mountains fade into the distance as we leave the mainland.
6

This is one of the tiny islands that dots the water around the two larger islands of the cluster.
7

Our skipper, Danny, approaches Plantation Beach Resort where we will stay for 6 days.
8

Keith and Peg outside our room overlooking the water.
9

Our view from the patio of the wharf and cabana where boats dock.
10

Peg and Sue explore a neighboring cove during an early morning hike.
11

Meals in the dining hall/bar were served when the bell rang.
12

Waiting for the dinner bell, Keith and Peg enjoy a beer at sunset from the deck of the dining hall.
13

Keith appreciates Cuba, the resort's mascot who accompanied him and Sue on a hike to the lighthouse atop the island.
14

Sue paddles the kayak while Peg snorkels in tow.
15

They head out around the coral point at the edge of the cove and over to the next cove.
16

Our cook, Donna, receives the appreciation of everyone including Peg and Sue.
17

The dive boat departs from the dock to take some guests back to catch their flight home.
18

With Danny at the helm, Peg and Sue enjoy the sights during a tour to the outlying island and Garifuna communities.
19

This was on the same island as the resort but on the other side. It contained a school for the island children.
20

This fishing village filled most of this medium sized island.
21

Yet another sparsely populated island in the cluster.  Nice water!
22

Pulling into the birthday near the resort to which we had been invited. Families & kids came from the various local islands.
23

The birthday girl, Hadessa, 8, and her "Hello Kitty" pinata.
24

Pinata time.  A good time was had by all.
25

Peg and Sue during the morning snorkel expedition.
26

Keith in the hammock at the cabana on the dock. Nice life!!
27

View of the resort dining hall from the dock.  Repair work is in progress from the recent rains.
28

The local construction crew on their way home after a hard day's work.
29

Hadessa learns Tai Chi from Sue on the beach.
30

Peg and Sue enjoy Mauricio's first attempt to make piņa coladas.  He did a great job.
