Day 3 - Stavanger to Slogvik Home - Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001

"Walking back to our hotel that afternoon on the still frost covered walkways, we had enough time to pick up our suitcases and walk just a little over a block to the bus terminal. The sun was setting as we traveled north on the bus from Stavanger. It was dark by the time we arrived in Aksdal where Einar picked us up.  Soon we were being greeted again in the warm and comfortable Slogvik home. We will have to describe later in more detail about the room were we are now staying. Our bed room now has a rather long name, but the short version is the 'Slooper Suite.'  After some great food and conversation, we both slept very well. It was so wonderful to be back with these dear friends who have come to mean so much to our lives."

Walking back toward the center of town from the Quaker meeting, this statue with cannons catches Keith's eye. In a hurry now, we had not time to read the plaque.

Another view across the harbor. The taller rust colored Custom House left of center and the Valberg Tower show prominently here.

A view from the rear of that cable laying ship that we saw last night. Keith is still amazed at the size of that cable spool.

And this poster catches Peg's eye --- a rather interesting bit of holiday commercial art.

Sadly this photo did not turn out well. It is of the place on the quay near the fish market where they were selling Christmas trees that were brought in on the boat that is just visible behind the 3 folks on the left.

A day time view of the front of the Cathedral with the statue of Alexander Kielland now with his usual seagull on his hat.

A view of the shopping area just to the north of the Cathedral with its tree, holiday train and "Love is Giving" shop window.

As it turned dark, we traveled from Stavanger to the Slogvik home in Tysvær. After hugs and warm greetings by our dear friends, we were shown the room where we would be staying. It was recently remodeled for an emigrant theme.

Our very comfortable “himmelseng” (or traditional canopy box bed) is the center point of this photo. Just one of the 2 Santa Nisse dolls on our pillows peeks out. Part of the antique bathroom equipment can be seen at far left (just for looks - modern bathroom across the hall).

Keith stands in the doorway as Peg takes this photo of the old clock and the chest Einar had made. "Slooper" Jakob Andersen Slogvik was Keith's 2nd great grandfather and 1825 was the year he sailed to America aboard the sloop Restoration.

Here Einar and Rotraud Slogvik (along with PC checking out the chamber pot) pose in the Super Slooper Service Senter Special Suite!!! The SSSS or Super Slooper Service Senter is a fun and intriguing idea that will need further explanation (see below).*

This chest was unopened that first night as we we told that the key was lost. Tired Keith slept well but woke to find a key in the bed. Opening the chest we find this Munch/Einar style painting as well as new mittens knitted by Rotraud - AND Tysvær bygdebøker 6 & 7 for Keith!!

* The SSSS or Super Slooper Service Senter is an idea that the Slogviks and Wheelers have discussed and played with. It is still a rather vague concept but revolves around the idea of having some facility here on the Slogvik farm or nearby where visitors could come. In addition to a place to stay, it could offer some or all of the following:

Please let us know what you think of this idea --- is it good? is it crazy? would there be any interest? is it practical (i.e., economically feasible)?  Drop a line to either the Wheelers at okwheeler@saber.net or the Slogviks at rotraud@online.no
