Day 13 - Hike around Slogvik Farm (study of light, shapes & views) - Dinner at Steinbu Farm - Wed., Dec. 26, 2001

Another colorful and interesting morning sky at Slogvik! Again we are reminded of the local artist, Lars Hertervig, who was called the "painter of light." We think of him and this phrase often as we hike around the Slogvik farm this day.

At first Keith thought these boughs on the steps by the door were an accident and carefully stepped over them. As we found them at the entry of most homes, we realized that this is another Norwegian holiday tradition that brings sweet forest smells in to the house.

Keith is ready for a hike in his new "very Norwegian" sweater.

Keith found these lines and patterns in the snow interesting.

Peg found the play and angle of the low sun light on these trees and rocks inspirational. (Hertervig?)

The low sun makes for long shadows.

At mid day, the sun here is just behind the trees on the horizon.

Our favorite photo of the fjord as it is just beginning to freeze. This is north of the Slogvik home and looking northeast.

Again, we find the shapes of this grove of trees interesting-- just another gorgeous visual treat in paradise.

On our way back from our trek, we choose a easy path over the frozen Slogvik Lake. Being cautious, we hug the edges just in case.

Keith & Peg are greeted by Ingvild Sønstabø and Stig Helgesen at their home on the Steinbu farm.  These gracious people added to our world experiences through their tales of the experiences they had in Africa where they lived for several years. (Photo by Einar.)

We are treated  to a complete feast with traditional holiday dishes of pork rib & rind, Christmas sausage, and sauerkraut. In addition to soft drinks, Hansa beer and aquavit were options for toasting. Clockwise from Left: Carl Sigurd, Ida Amelie, Einar, Ingvild, Peg and Marit.

High tech Carl is here researching shotguns on the Internet. A recent gift of money is the inspiration and motivation. Keith envied this excellent computer desk.

Great conversation and shared viewpoints continued over coffee, sherry and other holiday treats. Even politics and religion were discussed.

The home made ice cream with fruit compote and holiday cookies were popular with everyone.  African treasures and artifacts are seen atop the book case.
