3776. James CLEGHORN
(476)(1085) was born on 5
Jun 1588 in West Craigs, Scotland. "Mr. (William Crumby) Claghorn (in his
Claghorn book published abt 1912) traces his name in its various spellings back
to the misty times before written accounts about the land we know as Scotland.
He states that Glegerne is a very old name of Celtic origin and the name of
a place where the Roman general, Agricola, established a camp in A. D. 80. Centuries
later the Barony of Cleghorne is mentioned in a Papal Bull of 1203. As a family
name, it first appears in the 15th century in Lanarkshire and by 1600 there were
a number of families with that name living in the area. Mr. Claghorn believes
that we are descended from James Cleghorn the elder who died in West Craigs,
5 June 1588 leaving sons James and Harry (or Henry) as well as other children."
