IMMIGRANT - "Atwood is an old name in England and was used by many families whose home was in or near a forest. Thus the earliest American Atwoods are not likely to be all closely related, and there seem to be at least half a dozen different families. Our Stephen ... is first heard of in Plymouth in 1643, along with a John Atwood who was probably his brother but not the same John Atwood who was later assistant governor and treasurer of Plymouth Colony. Stephen married Abigail Dunham there on either 6 or 16 Nov 1644 and some time after they moved to that part of Eastham which became Wellfleet a century later. They are said to be the ancestors of all the Cape Cod Atwoods. Stephen died there 1 Feb 1693/4. ... Stephen Atwood had been one of the founders of Eastham in 1651." (Bonnie Hubbard)
